Media Release:

Country cooking fuels a school fundraising project

Waihi School is set to sizzle on Monday 13 October 2008 at 5pm when a cookbook is launched.   The ‘sizzle’ will be from a favourite venison recipe from Sir Tim Wallis, Bulgogi, which will be on the menu for the launch.  The cookbook features recipes with fresh meats and vegetables, as well as traditional home baking. The book is a modern cookbook that takes healthy country cooking to new levels.

‘Fuel For Your Family’ by the Waihi Cooks is the title of the book featuring fresh farm cuisine.  Wholesome country cooking is the theme with stunning lifestyle and food photography.    All of the recipes have been road tested by Waihi School families with hungry boys.  Waihi School is in the heart of South Canterbury, a province rich in agriculture and industry, and an area where families and their activities are at the core of what we do and how we live.

It was with this in mind that the concept of ‘Fuel for your Family’ was developed.  Family cooks will be inspired by the useful recipes, with sections such as ‘Fill the Tins, ‘Morning Muster’, and ‘The Family Pudding’.  Included are family recipes for Rolled Pavlova, Whitebait Patties, Rich Chocolate Mousse, Easy Chocolate Cake and Egg & Bacon Pudding.

A committee of school parents produced the book.  Chairperson Rose Acland says “the book was inspired by a Waihi past parent, Jo Acland, who was legendary for hearty country cooking for her family of hungry boys.  We all have the challenge of providing hearty meals for our families and our book offers tried and true favourites, each beautifully presented and photographed.  We aimed to show an essence of Waihi School, the blend of rural and urban, and produce a modern cookbook that takes healthy country cooking to new levels. The book is fresh, earthy and wholesome, using home-grown product photographed in its natural state in the vegetable garden.”

The cookbook is a fundraiser for the ‘Centenary Complex’ a new accommodation and dayboys facility at Waihi School.  In 2007 the small rural school celebrated it’s centenary and embarked on the campaign.  With no government funding for the new building, the school has been innovative about how to raise funds.  “A cookbook is a creative way to reach out beyond our school community to fundraise for our biggest development in 100 years” says Campaign Chairman, Jeff Pearse.

“Fuel for your Family” by Waihi Cooks is available from the school website, www.waihi.school.nz, or through selected café’s, and also at A&P Shows. Le Café will stock the book in Christchurch.  The book is a substantial 208 pages and will retail for $35.

For information about the book, contact Rose Acland, telephone (03) 696 3707.  For more information on Waihi School, and the Centenary Campaign contact Sue Harrison South, telephone (03) 615 7040, 027 547 9739.
