The excitement of seeing a new food venue pop up in Christchurch is tantamount to Phoenix rising from the ashes (aka the rubble). Not only is it a sign of our city healing, it is the anticipation of something new, refreshed and different. There is an opportunity to move away from some of the staid memories of the old city and introduce unique food and dining experiences with great food. Not to say that there wasn’t good food before, there was, it just often wasn’t that exciting.
Southside introduces seasonal and local based menu’s as you would expect but also continue to evolve their experience with new menus and updates. On their current menu is what seems to be becoming their signature dish, a delightful sounding blue cheese panna cotta with stonefruit and sough-dough. I tried the mushrooms (of course) companioned with polenta, chilli, garlic, almonds, thyme and truffle and it was great. Not that I have a specific diet mantra to follow but it was also gluten free and vegan and still good.
To make the experience complete, they are also equipped to liven up your favourite tipple whether this is alcoholic, virgin or something swished together using – the recently launched in New Zealand – Seedlip a botanical flavouring touted as the world first non-alcoholic spirit.
So whether you want to explore something interesting on a menu, find a venue for a friends lunch or enjoy one of the themes/menu's/events on offer it looks like Southside's formula is a winner that’s worth a visit.
